What Are Aesthetic Filaments?

Aesthetic 3D printing filaments are PLA-based materials engineered for visual effect rather than mechanical performance. Types of Aesthetic Filaments

Silk Filament

Everfil™ PLA-Silk is the signature aesthetic material in the Robust3D Zone range. It produces a glossy, almost liquid-metal sheen on the printed surface a noticeably different look from the matte or semi-gloss finish of standard PLA. No enclosure, special bed surface, or all-metal hotend is required for any filament in the aesthetic range. Standard blue painter's tape or a BuildTak-style surface provides reliable adhesion across all four materials.

Tips for Printing with Aesthetic Filaments

  • Use a larger nozzle for Wood and Mineral filaments. Both contain fine particulate fillers (wood fibre, mineral powder) that can cause wear or partial clogging in a 0.4mm nozzle over time. A 0.6mm nozzle reduces this risk and is the manufacturer's recommended size for these two materials.
  • Slow down for silk finishes. While Silk PLA prints within the standard 50–100mm/s range, dropping to the lower end of that window on outer walls improves surface gloss and reduces visible striations where the shine effect is most noticeable.
  • Increase infill and wall count for glow-in-the-dark prints. Everfil™ PLA Glow in Dark relies on photoluminescent pigment concentration to produce a visible glow after charging under sunlight or UV/LED light. Thicker walls and higher infill hold more pigment and noticeably extend glow brightness and duration.
  • Charge glow filament before judging the effect. A finished glow-in-the-dark print needs several minutes of direct light exposure (sunlight or a bright LED) before it will glow don't judge the effect under low ambient light alone.
  • Sand or seal Wood and Mineral prints for tactile realism. Light sanding brings out the wood grain texture on PLA-Wood prints and smooths the chalky surface on PLA Mineral for an even more convincing finished look.
  • Keep retraction settings tight. All four materials in this range perform best with 1–3mm retraction at 40–60mm/s this minimizes stringing, which is especially visible (and distracting) on high-gloss silk surfaces.
